One Free Patent Application for Professional Inventors. The firm offers to prosecute one patent application free of attorney fees for clients who retain the firm to prosecute multiple inventions. This offer is good only for new clients who have at least two inventions to be prosecuted by the firm. The inventor will be responsible for all actual casts and filing fees incurred in the course of prosecution. Advance payment of filing fees to a deposit account is normally required.

Billing Discount for Complex Inventions. High tech inventions will be prosecuted at a 50% discount of billable hours. In all cases, the firm will write off 50% billable hours. This is the same as giving a 50% cash discount on legal fees. The billing rates of patent attorneys range from $150 to $250 per hour, depending upon, among other things, the nature of inventions, attorneys' qualifications and abilities, and technical training.

Attorney Fee Caps. When attorney fees are based upon billable hours, the firm may set a cap on legal fees for preparing and filing a patent application.  This cap is determined on a case-by-case basis. It generally ranges from $1,500 for a simple device to $15,000 for highly complex inventions (such as pioneer complex instrument). Many appliations have a cap around $4,000. After total legal fees have reached the cap, the firm is prohibited from further billing. The cap, however, is not applicable to follow-up work, continued prosecution and appeals. The firm bills for follow-ups work such as responses to office actions, continued prosecution (a second-round of application),  prosecution of appeals at a nominal rate of $90 per hour as described in the following paragraph.

Nominal Billable Rate of $90 Per Hour. When attorney fees is billed on billable hours, the firm bills attorney fees for all follow-up works at the nominal rate of $90 per hour AFTER total legal fees have reached the cap. This policy is intended to dramatically reduce attorney fees for complex inventions  that require many rounds of prosecution over a  long period of time.  Compared with the prevalent rate of $200 for a Ph.D. patent attorney, this billing practice in effect reflects a more than 50% cash discount

If legal fees do not reach the cap throughout the prosecution cycle, the 50% time discount and the cap will remain applicable to all services rendered in all stages of prosecution. However, the $90 nominal billing rate is not applicable in such case. This nominal billing rate takes effect only after attorney fees have reached the cap AND the patent application has been prepared for filing.

Since the firm has a policy to contract only patent attorneys who have rigid technical backgrounds, it generally will not bill clients for consultant fees (there are exceptions, however). It is the firm¡¯s policy that patent attorneys working for the firm must have a strong scientific background. They can draft patent applications more efficiently than by relying upon consultants. Consequently, the total saving would be more than 50% off customary legal fees a law firm would charge according to the prevalent billing practice in the industry.

Patent Prosecution for Fixed Fees.  As a result of break-though in developing professional tools, A Z Patent is now able to offer patent prosecution for fixed fees. This option is available to clients who are small entities and inventions that do not fall within any of high technology fields. The firm offers to prosecute a patent application for qualified clients for fixed attorney fees in an amount from $2500 to $3500.  It then charges $250 to $500 for each office response and other substantive follow-up paper. This is equivalent to billing for only one (1) hour at the prevalent billing rate!. Clients will bear all filing fees and other actual costs.
